Questions to Ask Yourself when Considering Career Interests

If you’re ambitious but don’t necessarily have a full understanding of what you want to do for the long term from a career standpoint, that’s okay! When considering a career interest, here are some important questions to ask yourself to help guide you in the right direction:

What are my passions and interests?

  • Reflect on the activities, subjects, or causes that genuinely excite and engage you. Identifying your passions can guide you toward a career that aligns with your interests.

What are my strengths and skills?

  • Assess your abilities, talents, and skills. Consider the tasks that come naturally to you or that you enjoy doing. Identifying your strengths can help you find a career that allows you to leverage and develop those skills.

What are my values and priorities?

  • Consider aspects such as work-life balance, social impact, opportunities for growth, or financial stability. Aligning your career with your values can lead to greater satisfaction and fulfillment.

What are my long-term goals?

  • Think about your aspirations and where you see yourself in the future. Consider your desired lifestyle, professional achievements, and personal growth. Having a clear vision of your long-term goals can guide you in choosing a career path that supports your ambitions.

What education or training is required?

  • Determine the educational or training requirements for the careers you're considering. Consider whether you're willing and able to pursue the necessary education or gain the required skills. (We’re here to help with this!)

Am I willing to invest the effort and commitment required?

  • Evaluate your dedication and willingness to invest the necessary time, effort, and energy into pursuing and excelling in your chosen career. Consider the commitment required for education, skill development, and professional growth.

When beginning to plan for your career, or considering a career pivot, it’s always a daunting and potentially stressful task to think about everything you’ll need to do to achieve your end goal. It’s important, more than anything, to have an understanding of what truly interests you, because a true passion is what’s ultimately going to land you your dream job!
